Arcus senilis is a common condition of the eyes. It appears as a white, gray or blue ring around the cornea of the eye. Vision will remain unaffected. The majority of people affected by condition are older adults, as the main cause of the condition is aging. It’s caused by lipid deposits deep in the edge of the cornea. It is more likely to occur in men more than women. The condition is generally harmless, although it can sometimes be a sign of high cholesterol in people under 45 years of age. High levels of cholesterol in a person’s blood can cause significant problems, such as coronary artery disease or cardiovascular disease. To diagnose arcus senilis, a doctor will perform an eye examination. There is no treatment needed for arcus senilis.
